The Drip Edition 10

“Don’t call me, I’ll call you.”

This is not – despite what those of you who know me might think – a plea for people to stop phoning me.

I am in fact off to New York next week, and I’ll be taking a three week break from The Drip as I swan about New York in Autumn, so you won’t be able to look forward to my many rants ;musings. I’ll be back in action on the 11th October.

In an attempt to sate your media appetites, I have given the usual content plus some bonus things you might like, and I have tried to keep this week’s content relatively light.

Filming Has Begun On After Life 2

A few months ago I spoke about the brilliance of After Life, a Comedy-Drama series by Ricky Gervais.

Whilst I am a fan of Ricky Gervais’ work, he tends to the more flippant, sarcastic, and somewhat insensitive side of comedy, with very little in the way of emotional depth.

Most of his work is steeped in mockery, and sits amusingly and awkwardly in the space of cringe-comedy, designed to provoke discomfort. This is of course no exception, except for one key difference: this has heart.

It’s so beautifully inspiring, that I found myself on the cusp of tears for most of it, whilst also laughing my face off. Gervais gets deep and real for possibly the first time in his career and it doesn’t feel trite (unlike his Hollywood stinkers).

The character development is wonderful, and you really feel for all of them in a meaningful way.

I can’t wait for season 2!

This Digital Art Exhibit Changes Based on Visitor’s Mood

This beautiful exhibition shows the relationship between flowers and people, showing the flower petals falling and uses your senses to change the environment. It also has lots of cherry blossoms, which are beautiful.

Planes Are Tracking Your Bathroom Use

That’s right. New Airbus planes are using sensors to track myriad data points, and one of those is passengers’ use of bathrooms. Why?

They want to learn everything about you, from how many hours of Ed Sheeran you watch to how often you recline your seat. The idea is to use data to assist with things like plane maintenance, overhead bin space, content needs and keeping toilet queues to a minimum.

It sounds trite, but I think this is a really good use of data!

For too long planes have just operated the way they do because they are a transitory space, but they need to become more experience-focused for all passengers, not just the business class and above, and that means something as simple as looking to ensure the base experience has at least some level of dignity – ie making sure the experience is at a minimum not totally unpleasant.

If airlines can track our use of the bathroom to understand customer needs better, reducing costs for the airline and therefore the passengers, that is fine by me!
